Ever wonder why they call it breakfast?
When I was younger I took it to mean fast break, grabbing a quick bite on the go. Now, I know different. The first meal of the day if called breakfast because that is exactly what you are doing. You are breaking the fast that you performed that night. You do not eat while you sleep so you are fasting; allowing your body to digest and process all the food you ate the day(s) before.
So now the question becomes, Why are the first foods we consume after a fast processed, dead, and/or sweet? Coming off of a fast you should be edifying your body giving it nutrients in the form of vitamins and minerals.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is undebatable considering it is the first meal after a fast. However what time we have breakfast is where the different opinions may clash. I believe you should not rush your body into consuming foods as soon as you just wake up.
Image your body like a computer, if you begin to work as soon as you start the computer it will be slow and occasionally pause. This is because you didn’t give it a chance to load all the backend file and programs that allow you to work efficiently. The same concept is applied to your body. When you first wake your body needs time to transition from sleep mode where it cleans and repairs to active mode where it moves, digests and thinks.
Your first meal should be consumed 4-5 hours after you wake. Ensuring your body is up and running and so it will efficiently be able to breaks down and process the food you are consuming. This is not to say you will be starving in that time frame.
As soon as you wake drink a tall glass of room temperature, filtered water with lime. The water will hydrates your body and the acid from the lime will jump start your body to begin the transition we just discussed. Afterwards perform your morning oral hygiene routine and don’t forget to stretch. Now you are ready to start you day. An hour to an hour and a half after your morning routine, eat some fruit. The water content in the fruit will keep your body hydrated and fruit is full of essential nutrients plus it is easy for the stomach to digest.
Wait another hour or so and you are ready for your first meal. Assuming you have a conventional 9-5 job this should be lunch time. Eat a healthy well balanced meal and when your work day is over you will eat dinner.
