How often do you dwell on the past either in thought or conversation? Do you say something like, “If only this didn’t happen, I wish I could have changed that, or I should have done this instead”?
Yes, this is you? Then my response to you is “hakuna matata”; yes the same hakuna matata from the Disney movie Lion King.
The past is gone, what is done is done, there is no getting it back. You cannot change your past so why do you insist on dwelling on what could of been? Why put yourself through that torture? Why stay stuck in a rut because you keep dwelling on those “If only” moment or moments in your life? Those shoulda, coulda, woulda moments.
There is a difference between dwelling on the past and reflecting on the events that have taken place. When you dwell on the past you mentally live there and you never move forward. You never reach your God given potential, you never strive for change. Dwellers live in the realm of “If only this would have happened.”
When you reflect on your past you see what you could have done differently. You look at the past as a learning experience and grow. Reflectors live in the realm of “next time I will do this instead.”
In the 5 Week Transformation Course we teach you how to learn from the past without getting stuck trying to change it. One of the things we teach you is to stop living in the past and look toward the future. Phillipians 3: 13-14 … Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. That’s the amazing thing about living on Earth. Each day is a new beginning. You didn’t like what happened the day before. No worries, you don’t have to re-live it again.
This is when people get negative and begin to make excuses or complain about how unrealistic it is to have a new beginning. These people truly believe they have no choice but to continue living the same life over and over again, just wearing different clothes. I say NO! This is fear talking (which we also cover in the 5 Week Transformation Course) at any moment, at any time you can decide to stop living in the past. You can decide that today is a new day and be determined not to make the same choices you had previously made.
Examples: you can take a different route to work, you can quit your job, you can stop letting what other people think effect you, you can stop talking to negative Nelly, you can take control of your emotions, you can volunteer to help the less fortunate, you can do that one thing to help you reach your goal.
You and only you are in charge of your future. Are you going to live looking in the rearview mirror?
